How to Prepare Your Melbourne Garden Edging for Spring: What to Check After Winter

August arrives in Melbourne and most gardens are still wet, still dormant, and still giving nothing away. But the window between the last hard rain of winter and the first real growth push of spring is one of the most useful times to take a proper look at what the last few months have done to a garden edging installation.

Clay soils that spent winter expanding under sustained rainfall are now beginning to dry and contract. Anything that shifted, lifted, or bowed during that process is still visible now. Come September, when new growth and fresh mulch go in, those problems are harder to see and much harder to fix without disturbing an established garden. Catching them before the season turns is considerably less effort than finding them six months later with plantings in the way.

Why the Transition Out of Winter Matters for Edging

Melbourne's reactive clay soils don't behave the same year-round. The transition between seasons is when the effects of that behaviour show up most clearly in garden edging installations.

Through winter, sustained rainfall causes clay to absorb moisture and expand. That expansion pushes outward and upward against anything embedded in the ground. Through spring and into summer, the same soil dries and contracts, pulling back from the edging profile, sometimes leaving gaps, sometimes allowing sections that were pushed to settle back, and sometimes making it clear that a section which was already marginal has moved further than was obvious during the wet months.

What you see in August, once the worst of the rain has passed but before the soil has fully dried, is a reasonably accurate picture of how the installation actually performed through winter. Distortion that's visible now won't correct itself as the season changes. It'll just become harder to see.

What to Look For Along the Run

A post-winter check doesn't need to be complicated. A slow walk along the full run of edging, looking from a low angle, tells you most of what you need to know.

The line of the edging is the first thing to assess. A well-specified, correctly installed steel profile should still be running straight, or following its intended curve, after a Melbourne winter. A visible bow along a straight section, even a subtle one, means the profile was pushed by lateral soil pressure at some point during the season. A bow that's new this year is worth monitoring. One that has deepened from the previous season points to a systemic issue rather than a one-off, and that distinction matters for deciding what to do next.

Uplift at anchor points is worth checking separately. This is where the top of the profile sits visibly higher than its surrounding sections, usually at a peg or stake location, because the upward soil pressure at that point exceeded the anchoring resistance through the wet season. Minor uplift on an otherwise stable run can often be corrected. Widespread uplift across multiple anchor points usually points to installation depth that was never adequate for the soil type on that site.

The condition of joins is worth inspecting closely too. A properly fabricated join in heavy gauge steel shouldn't have moved through normal seasonal ground movement. If joins have stepped out of alignment or opened up, the connection method or anchoring on either side wasn't holding adequately under soil pressure. A finding worth taking seriously rather than treating as cosmetic.

Reading the Soil Around the Base

Soil level and condition around the base of the edging tells its own story, and both sides of the profile are worth looking at.

On the garden bed side, check whether soil or mulch has built up above the top of the edging along any section. If it has, rainfall has been washing over the top of the profile rather than being contained by it, which defeats one of the basic functions of garden edging and tends to push mulch onto adjacent lawn or paving over time. Pulling the soil level back below the top of the profile is a simple task to do now before the spring mulch goes on.

On the lawn side, a small gap between the base of the edging and the soil surface, where the ground has pulled slightly away from the steel as it begins to dry, is normal behaviour on reactive clay. It typically closes as the season progresses. A more significant gap, or one that extends well below what seasonal shrinkage alone would produce, can indicate the profile has moved upward rather than the soil simply contracting away from it.

Surface Condition on Mild Steel

Winter is the hardest season on any surface coating, and a post-winter inspection is the right time to run a visual check along the full length of a mild steel installation.

Look for surface damage, scratching, or areas where bare steel has been exposed through coating damage from mower contact or garden tool use. Any exposed sections are worth treating before spring, since irrigation and more frequent soil moisture through the growing season accelerate surface corrosion at unprotected points. A rust inhibitor or touch-up paint applied now takes a few minutes and prevents a minor surface issue from establishing further.

Also worth doing: clear any accumulated organic matter from the base of the edging on both faces. Leaves, mulch, and plant debris trapped against the steel hold moisture and are the most common cause of surface corrosion at ground level on otherwise well-maintained mild steel.

Corten Steel Needs Less Attention, But Still Worth Checking

Corten installations generally come through Melbourne winters in better structural shape than mild steel, since the patina performs as the material's own protective surface through the wet season rather than relying on a coating that can be compromised.

The post-winter check for corten is primarily structural. The same line, join, and uplift assessment applies. Any runoff staining on adjacent concrete or paving that occurred through the patina's active development phase is worth rinsing down now before spring foot traffic embeds it further, though on a mature corten installation this is less likely to have been an issue.

Sometimes a post-winter check reveals problems that sit beyond the scope of maintenance. A run that has bowed progressively across multiple seasons, joins that keep separating despite being re-secured, or widespread uplift across an entire installation all point to an original specification that wasn't adequate for the soil conditions on that site.

Ongoing remediation in those cases manages symptoms rather than solving the underlying problem. Soil conditions don't change, and a profile that couldn't resist Melbourne's reactive clay movement this winter won't resist it next winter either. The question becomes whether repeated repair costs across several more seasons add up to more than a properly specified replacement done once.

August is a reasonable time to make that call. A spring installation into soil that is beginning to dry out after winter gives a new installation the best possible settling conditions before the first summer heat arrives.
