Established trees have extensive root systems extending well beyond the visible canopy, and surface roots in particular put upward and lateral pressure on anything sitting in the soil around them. Melbourne's reactive clay soils compound this, since the same seasonal ground movement that affects all garden edging becomes more unpredictable near tree root zones, where root mass, moisture competition, and soil composition create localised conditions that differ from the surrounding garden.
Getting edging around trees right means understanding both the above-ground design intent and the below-ground reality.
Understanding What Tree Roots Actually Do to Edging
The relationship between tree roots and garden edging plays out over years rather than seasons, which is part of why it's underappreciated at the time of installation.
Surface roots, common in many of Melbourne's established garden trees including eucalypts, jacarandas, liquid ambers, and large ornamental figs, grow horizontally through the upper soil layers where moisture and oxygen are most available. Edging installation depth near established trees requires more thought than a standard garden bed installation, because the below-ground environment around a tree is more complex.
Driving a steel profile to full installation depth directly through an established surface root zone can damage roots, particularly the smaller feeder roots important for the tree's water and nutrient uptake. The general principle is to install edging shallower near root zones than would otherwise be specified for soil retention, and to compensate for that reduced anchoring depth by choosing a heavier gauge profile that can hold its position with less below-ground depth.
A useful first step is assessing where the primary surface roots are running before installation begins, which is usually visible from the soil surface. Edging runs that cross significant surface roots need to be detailed to allow for root movement rather than holding a rigid position against biology that will keep growing regardless.
Allowing for Root Movement Over Time
The most practical design decision when edging around established trees is building in tolerance for root-related adjustment rather than treating the installation as permanent.
Continuous edging runs that form a complete circle are harder to adjust when a surface root eventually pushes a section than installations using shorter sections with deliberate join points at locations where adjustment is anticipated. A join that allows a short section to be removed, raised, or repositioned without disturbing the entire circle costs nothing extra at installation and can save considerable effort a few years later.
This doesn't affect how the installation looks from the surface. A well-specified tree circle edging in heavy gauge steel or corten looks clean and deliberate. The flexibility for future adjustment is built into how it's constructed, not how it appears.

Mulch Depth and Profile Height for Tree Circles
The relationship between profile height and mulch depth is worth getting right before installation rather than after.
Australian horticultural guidance generally recommends mulch depths of 50mm to 75mm around established trees, applied in a flat doughnut shape that keeps clear of the trunk base by at least 100mm to allow airflow and prevent bark rot. Mulch piled too deep or directly against the trunk can restrict oxygen exchange to the root zone and cause long-term harm to the tree, so the edging profile height should be sized to suit the appropriate mulch depth rather than inviting a deeper application.
A profile height of 75mm to 100mm above ground level on the outer face is generally appropriate for a standard tree circle at the recommended mulch depth, providing enough containment to hold mulch in place without encouraging over-application. Where the surrounding lawn or garden bed level is lower than the mulched tree circle, a taller profile may be needed to manage that level difference cleanly and prevent mulch from washing outward onto the lawn after heavy rain.
Corten Versus Mild Steel for Tree Circle Applications
Both materials are appropriate for tree circle edging. The choice between them follows the same logic as any other residential application, with one additional consideration worth mentioning.
In a tree circle context, where organic matter from leaf fall and the biological activity of the root zone create conditions for surface corrosion at the base of the profile, corten's inherent corrosion resistance is a practical advantage over mild steel that relies on a surface coating. The coating on mild steel can be compromised over time by the organic material and moisture that accumulate at the base of a tree circle, whereas corten's patina is the material itself rather than a surface treatment applied over it.
Mild steel remains a sound choice where the aesthetic preference is for a darker, uniform finish, particularly in formal garden styles where corten's warm tones may not suit the overall design. At appropriate gauge thickness, mild steel performs well with the same basic maintenance that applies to any outdoor installation.
When Existing Edging Has Already Been Pushed
Many Melbourne homeowners arrive at this conversation not in the planning stage but after the fact. An existing installation around a tree has already been pushed, lifted, or deformed by root growth, and the question is what to do about it.
The first step is assessing whether the deformation is isolated or widespread.
