Steel Edging Detailed With You, Fabricated by Us
Steel edging is often one of the most visible lines in a landscape, and it's usually one of the last details anyone checks with the people who'll make it. Bringing us in during design development means questions about material, thickness, height, joins and junctions are settled while they're still easy to change on the drawings.
Fourever Steel & Corten fabricates every component in our own Melbourne workshop and installs with our own crew. We cut, roll and weld Corten and mild steel to suit each design, from fine 3mm Corten bed edges through to 6mm retaining edges, radius work and fabricated planters. With more than 300 projects completed and over 15 years' experience across construction, carpentry, landscaping and steel fabrication, we can tell you early how a detail will behave once it's in the ground.
Material Selection: Corten or Mild Steel
The right material depends on the finish you're after, the site's exposure and how the edge meets the surfaces around it. We fabricate in both, and many projects use each where it suits best.
How Corten Weathers
Corten builds its protective patina through repeated wetting and drying. The colour moves from bright orange towards a deep brown over time, and the rate depends on exposure, so sheltered faces weather more slowly and less evenly than open ones.
Site Conditions That Affect Performance
Weathering steel performs best with regular wet and dry cycles and good airflow. Sites with high salt exposure, sections that stay constantly wet and steel buried in poorly drained ground won't develop a stable patina in the same way, and the buried portion of any steel edge behaves much like standard steel. Good drainage around the edge and consistent finished soil and mulch levels along the run both help long-term performance. On coastal or high-exposure sites, talk to us early about which material suits each part of the design.
Runoff and Staining Near Paving
While the patina is forming, runoff from Corten can stain concrete, stone and pavers. It's easiest to manage on the drawings: set the edge back from porous paving with a gravel or stone strip, fall runoff into planted areas, or seal paving that sits below the steel. We're happy to work through these junctions with you before the detail is locked in.
Thicknesses and Profile Heights
Thickness and height work together. A low bed edge in 3mm Corten keeps a fine, crisp line, while a taller edge or one holding back a level change needs the extra stiffness of 5mm or 6mm steel. Profile height is chosen relative to the total installation depth, covering how much steel sits below finished level for fixing and how much stands above it as a visible lip.
Rear-Welded Joins and Corners
Joins and corners are welded from the back face, so the visible edge reads as a single continuous line with no joiners, brackets, screws or bolts on show. Corners are fabricated to the angles your drawings call for.
Welded Joins, Concealed Fixings and Radius Fabrication
Concealed Rear Fixing System
Fixing lugs and pins are welded directly to the back of the steel, and the edge is pinned into the ground behind the finished face. Once the bed, lawn or paving is complete, nothing is visible from the front.
Custom Profiles and Fabricated Elements
Alongside flat edging, we fabricate planter boxes, tree surrounds, retaining edges, Corten cladding and cappings, and bespoke landscape steelwork from your drawings. If a detail isn't standard, send it through and we'll tell you how we'd make it.
